The Thirty-Seven Practices of a Bodhisattva, composed by Ngulchu Gyatsäl Thogme Zangpo, is a beautiful text that sums up all the study and practices of a Mahayana practitioner. This short, simple text provides complete guidance on how to live life without harming others. Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche begins this weekend teaching by explaining the importance of starting with tranquility meditation to provide the necessary foundation for engaging in the mind training practices taught in this text. The Main Body of the text includes verses on engaging in the preliminaries, meditating on relative bodhicitta, and meditating on absolute bodhicitta. The Concluding Section provides trainings in the six paramitas, abandoning various forms of confusion, benefiting others, and dedicating virtue.
Rinpoche’s teaching on these verses is simultaneously easy to understand and profound, including inspiring and engaging examples showing how these verses are practiced by realized beings as well as how they apply to our daily, modern world. Rinpoche begins the third talk by teaching a wonderful method for practicing these verses in a formal sitting session, including a guru yoga practice visualizing one’s guru as Chenrezik, reciting mantra, reciting a verse of the text, and generating aspirations. These talks are packed with insight. For every verse, Rinpoche treats us to entertaining and delightful examples that are full of insight and bring these teachings directly into our lives.
