This public talk was the beginning of a weekend teaching on The Nine Stages of Shamatha which is available separately as MP3 download, MP3CD, or as a DVD set. In this public talk, Lama Kathy Wesley speaks generally about the theory and practice of Buddhist meditation. She begins by noting that while most individuals have experienced calmness somewhere in their lives, we all long to experience a more consistent peace of mind and that this is often the motivation for seeking information on meditation. Based on the Buddha’s first teachings, Lama Kathy explains that happiness and suffering are in the mind and experienced by the mind. Therefore if we want to change our experience of the world, we need to work with our minds. She goes on to describe the practice of meditation, dispelling misconceptions about meditation and showing how meditation works with our minds to bring the calmness, goodness, compassion and wisdom that is the fundamental, awakened nature of our mind. Lama Kathy concludes this talk with an extensive period of group discussion, encouraging participants to comment on the teaching, share stories about their own experience of meditation, and pose questions. As always, Lama Kathy’s clear and humorous style of presentation makes the teachings very accessible.
